Ethiopian DP Sidamo - Finchewa

March 18, 2006
Not Available Green
Bob Yellin

This was a competition winner, having placed 6th with a jury score of 89.43 (the #1 winner got a 92.2), in the first-ever Ecafe Gold Competition held in Ethiopia in the Spring of 2005. But it was my favorite coffee of all the washed and unwashed Yirgacheffes and Sidamos, that I cupped before the auction. It's unwashed (dry-processed), Grade 3 certified Fair Trade and the Finchewa Cooperative grows its coffee at an altitude of about 6400 ft.

I cupped it twice; once before the auction (held on the Internet on June 30, 2005) and again after arrival in the U.S., with identical results. For more information on my roaster and method, see our reference page.

Roast Level: City
Rest: First cupping - 8 hours. Second cupping - 4 hours

This is a stunning coffee: very unique and special. It has perfect balance between its sweetness (very slightly fermented) and the underlying classic coffee flavors. And... fruit, fruit, fruit. Yes, it was like drinking fruit soup. It is very sweet and full of aromas and tastes of bananas, berries, starburst fruit and pineapple. It is a medium-bodied coffee with a lingering aftertaste and medium-high acidity.

The competition judges said, "... round, sweet fruit, spicy, creamy, winy and exciting, fruit, balanced, smooth, clean, sweet, floral with mocha twist, solid sweet sugar, pleasant dried fruit finish and balanced, creamy cup with note of coconut in aroma, floral and sweet".
